Fire Boat 1 Responds To Reported Offshore Boat Fire

Friday, October 30, 2015

Multiple calls were received advising that there was thick black smoke coming from a vessel in that area.  Land-based Fire Department units responded to the beach area between 30th Street and 60th Street, while Fire Boat 1 responded to the immediate area.

Once in the area, Fire Boat 1 assisted the United States Coast Guard as well as Maryland State Police Aviation in a search of the Ocean.  Fire Boat 1 was able to identify a radar contact approximately 4 miles offshore and relayed the information to Maryland State Police Aviation, who, along with the Coast Guard, made contact with the vessel.  After consulting with land-based fire units, it was determined that this was the vessel in question.  It was confirmed through actual contact by United States Coast Guard personnel that they were not, in fact, in any sort of distress.  Units were placed in service at that time.  Weather conditions at the time of the call were 44 degrees, with a water temperature of 39 degrees, winds out of the south at 5 to 10 knots, seas 2 to 4 feet.
